City Services & Operations Group - Building the Shoalhaven for the future

|

Main Road 92

Introduction

An official ceremony involving Federal, State and Local political representatives and the general community was held on 29th September 2001 to celebrate the commencement of construction works on Main Road 92.  The ceremony marked the result of over 100 years of community and Council support for the construction of Main Road 92 to provide a regional standard road which will link Shoalhaven to Canberra and other inland areas.

The project will provide a two lane sealed road from Nowra on the Coast, to Nerriga approximately 60km inland.

The project is valued at $80 million and is being funded by the three levels of Government – Federal and State ($34m each), and Shoalhaven City Council ($12m).

The project is being developed in several stages:

Main Road 92 – Albatross to Hames Road

This stage provided for 4.6km of new road, and minor upgrading of existing sections, and was the focus of official celebrations in September 2001.

This stage diverted traffic around Albatross Aviation Technology Park and HMAS Albatross and provided immediate benefits to residents at Hames Road and Yerriyong Road.

Construction works were undertaken by Contractor NACE Civil Engineering Pty Ltd of Sydney.  Stage 2 of this section was completed in September 2002.

Main Road 92 – Hames Road to Nerriga

The section of road, between Hames Road and Nerriga is currently in both development and construction stages. An Environmental Impact Statement was placed on public exhibition in December 2002 with public submissions closing in February 2003.

These works provides for the remaining 53km of sealed roadway (refer Maps below), generally on the existing road alignment, but with significant sections of new alignment, particularly in the area of Sassafras and Bulee Mountain.

This stage is being Project Managed by NSW Roads and Traffic Authority and details of the current status of works can be viewed on RTA's website.

Connecting Shoalhaven to the Inland Road Network (including ACT)

Shoalhaven City Council supports the establishment of the link beyond Nerriga to proceed to the west through Tarago and Bungendore into Queanbeyan and Canberra.  A shorter link to the Hume Highway from Tarago through Collector and on to Gunning is proposed as a future link.
