Illegal dumping is a blight on the Shoalhaven's natural beauty and environment. Rubbish dumping & littering raises a number of concerns such as environmental & aesthetic degradation of "local" natural areas, public health/safety & the financial costs incurred associated with operations.

Penalties

Simple littering attracts a penalty of between $60 & $200, whilst medium size dumpings can attract penalty notices ranging from $750 for individuals to $5000 for a company.

 

Larger/multiple dumpings are referred to Court for adjudication where penalties upon conviction in the Local Court range from to $11,000 for individuals to $22,000. for companies. Any deliberate and malicious acts which cause 'material harm' to the environment are heard in the Land & Environment Court where penalties range from $12,000 for individuals to $1million for companies.
